ACDS is competing for an Alexandria grant to make improvements to Monticello Park. Monticello Park is important because it is part of the migration path for many birds. If we get the grant, we will match the $5,000. The plan is to have students clean up the park, provide a recycling bin, extra seating, and picnic tables, clean up the picnic area, put in an educational and interactive bird board and tree board, etc. Here is the video we showed yesterday when ACDS presented to the Alexandria PARKnership board:
In the library, students learned how people tell stories using the comic book format. Then they created their own comic books using the Book Creator app. Click here to see all of the student's comics. Our school participated in The Hour of Code, a global movement reaching tens of millions of students in 180+ countries. The second grade class reviewed the concept that software is what tells computers what to do. "Apps" being the most recognizable term for software. They also watched the first half of the "How Computer Programs Works" video and "Think like a Computer" video.
Students used Scratch Jr. to practice coding. Scratch Jr. is a drag and drop block coding environment where kids can snap together blocks to create animations and games. It's a fun and easy way to learn how to program. Students are able to come up with an idea and then create it by coding it. Through coding, they learn the importance of giving very specific instructions, in the proper sequence, and how to trouble shoot. They also do some critical thinking along the way. You can download Scratch Jr from the App Store for free. There are two versions of Scratch Jr. - the original & one in collaboration with PBS Kids. They both work similarly, the PBSKids version has PBS Kids characters. Here's video that demonstrates PBS Kids version: In library class, we will be creating mystery books about baby animals or animal groups. Before we start making the books, we need to do some research. If you would like your book to be about BABY ANIMAL NAMES, you will use the ZooBorns Website. If you would like your book to be about ANIMAL GROUP NAMES, you will use one or both of these sites:
Second Grade Service Learning During the month of November Second Graders will be hosting a drive to support the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria. In keeping with our theme of “Animals and Nature,” we will be collecting any items from the list below to donate to our furry friends in need. There will be a box on each floor of ACDS. Our drive will be open for donations from October 30th-November 21st. On November 21, 2017 Stella Hanly will join us in Second Grade to share a bit about her role at the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria, she may even be accompanied by a 4 legged friend! The mission of the league is “To inspire compassion for all living things, to provide shelter to animals in need, and to promote adoptions, animal welfare, and responsible pet ownership in our community.”
In addition to our drive and presentation from Stella on November 21st, Second Graders will be creating various projects to further support the needs of animals in our community. We thank you as an entire grade in advance for your help in supporting animals in our community. The Shelter needs:
