Today we are kicking off the 2nd Marking Period Digital Arts Club class by having students design their own font by hand. We have never done Digital Art at ACDS, so this will be a fun adventure. In the first class, Vivi said she uses Sketchbook on her iPad and Nora said she likes to create animations. We're looking forward to having them show us their work.
Typography
Here's a video that talks about different aspects of Typography (also known as "fonts"). | Here are some sites where you can explore some custom font designs: |
Calligraphr
Calligraphr is a website that will transform your handwriting or calligraphy into a font! Creating your own font has never been easier. Click below to get started!
Instructions to Build Your Own Font
STEP 1: Click on "Create a Template"
Here are two templates that I have already downloaded for you to use. They are the minimal set of alphanumeric characters and punctuation that works with the "free" Calligraphr account which has a limit of a maximum of 75 characters. Note: you want to print these and not make photocopies to ensure the faint guidelines show up. |
STEP 2: Fill out the template. Use the faint guidelines to help size and align different letters, numbers, and punctuation. | STEP 3: Scan your template using a scanner app like Microsoft Lens. Here are instructions on how to use Microsoft Lens. The following explainer video shows how to scan the document and save it as a PDF. For this project you would save it into Photo Library instead. |
STEP 4: Click on "Upload Template"

I also did a quick test where I created 3 letters and did everything digitally. Then I uploaded into Calligraphr. Below you will see I add clipart images I found on the Internet to my calligraphr form. I added the images using Google Slides. Then I uploaded it into Canva and used it.
Create Your Own Fonts Digitally (not hand drawn)
Charlotte asked about online font makers. Here's an online article "10 Free Tools To Create Your Own Fonts" with some suggestions. I tried one out that looks promising called Font Struct. It seems pretty easy and fun. Here's a tutorial. If you try it, let me know how it goes. | |
