I introduced the students to EPIC!, an amazing digital library for kids 12 and under - with over 25,000 books, learning videos, quizzes, and more. It includes unlimited award-winning fiction, non-fiction, STEM, biographies, graphic novels, DIY & more. It is especially good for emergent readers - providing them with tools that let them explore independently. We set the students up with books for their reading level. I showed them the different types of resources available to them:
In addition, for each family in our class that signs up for Epic! and connects using our unique Classroom Code (UMK-4628), our class will receive points that I can view and redeem on our classroom rewards page for free books and supplies to enhance your child’s learning experience.
Once you have created an Epic! account, you can log in to any iOS device, Android device, or computer web browser, with the same email and password which you used to create the account.
- Featured Collections - are sets of books with the same characters such as Clifford the Big Red Dog or Sid the Science Kid.
- Read To Me - narrated books with text highlighting that let students follow along. With Read-to-Me books, students control what page they want to hear, so they can flip back and hear the same page again and again. Text highlighting lets them follow along word-by-word with the narration. They can even choose between "magnify" and "underline" for highlighting.
- Audio Books - are narrated books where the student simply listens to the story. The only image is the cover of the book. The student can rewind and skip forward through the book.
- Videos - There are many excellent educational videos. Some of these are in the format of Read-to-Me books where words are highlighted as they are read. Unlike read-to-me books, students can not flip the pages, but can rewind instead.
- eBooks - Most of the books are electronic books. Many of the books have on demand dictionaries. Students just tap a word and they can hear it spoken. It also shows them the definition of the word.
