In preparation for the science research project, Mrs. Lockwood did a lesson called Key to Keywords. The goal was to identify keyword strategies that would give students the best search results. The students discovered the benefits of using precise keywords, synonyms, and more than one keyword when searching for information online. They finished the class by brainstorming a list of keywords to use for our research project. |

We had a great field trip to the Microsoft Store yesterday. Everyone there was wonderful. The students had a lot of fun learning to code and exploring the store. A big "thank you" to everyone at the store! This afternoon we will be going on a field trip to the Microsoft Store at Pentagon City where you will learn the basics needed to code a game that runs as an app on a mobile phone or tablet. This is a little different than the block coding (graphical) we've used in the past. Today you will use text based coding. The coding concepts are the same. I liken it to the difference between baking a cake from a box mix and making one from scratch. One hides the complexity from you and the other gives you more flexibility. Here is a video of a Minecraft programmer editing text code for the game: We will try out how it all works by fixing a Jetpack Jumper game on a Surface Pro 4. The main character in the game is a crazy robot who is trying to make it through a maze of wacky obstacles. If you are interested in learning more you can check out Microsoft's Learn to Code site or Microsoft Imagine's create page.
This week is Festival of Learning and the theme this year is about the importance of "play". In the afternoons we will be creating educational games using the TinyTap app. The games we create can be played will be available to ACDS students and others and can be played on an iOS device, Android device, or web enabled device.
This afternoon we'll spend some time looking at a couple of apps that I created and then exploring other apps on the TinyTap site. Then we'll do a guided discovery on how to make an app using TinyTap. Here are a couple of apps I created using TinyTap:
Get ready, science is starting up again! We are going to use Animoto for a project, so today we're going to learn how to use it. Here is a link to the Animoto iOS app, Google Play app, and web app. All files are stored in the Animoto cloud, so students can login using their Fruit Password to access their files. Here's a sample video I created to demonstrate the capabilities: |
